Serving LGBTQ2S+ Participants in Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts
Session Description: Indigenous people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, and other identities of gender and sexuality (the acronym “LGBTQ2S+” is used to describe this community) are severely underserved, and yet, they make up a community who are most at risk of developing substance use disorders and experiencing other harms related to it. Despite this fact, there are currently no resources for serving this community in Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts. Additionally, there is little research about serving any LGBTQ2S+ person, Native or non-Native, in state treatment courts. In an effort to bridge this information gap and increase access to treatment services, this webinar, “Serving LGBTQ2S+ Participants in Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts,” will provide an overview of this topic and an overview of the available relevant resources that Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts serving Native LGBTQ2S+ participants may utilize.

Success Stories: The Power of Storytelling
Session Description: TLPI’s publication Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts: The Key Components (May 2014) describes the need for data collection to allow for evaluation on the effectiveness of a Tribal Healing to Wellness Court. Evaluation data provides specific programmatic measures that are required for program improvement and funding. However, these numbers alone do not tell the full story of the impact a Tribal Healing to Wellness Court has on a community. Data may be enhanced by storytelling and personal narrative from present and past participants in Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts. In addition to being a traditional process in which tribes communicate and document, storytelling offers perhaps the most profound insight to the success of Wellness Courts. Join us for TLPI’s The Power of Storytelling webinar to hear this type of storytelling and witness the potential that Wellness Courts possess to heal individuals, families, and entire communities. This webinar will feature the real-life stories of Wellness Court Alumni and their personal journeys from addiction to recovery.

Protectors, Warriors, Soldiers
Session Description: Native American veterans have generally adapted well to the military culture and it is after discharge that darting to civilian culture becomes a challenge for most. Tribal history and culture can be protective factors for veterans after discharge from active duty. For veterans who may become justice system-involved, Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts can provide trauma-sensitive and grounded services for veterans in Healing to Wellness Courts by gaining knowledge on how to integrate tribal history and culture into court systems and court services.
